AAIHR: DON'T BELIEVE THE MYTH THAT THE NURSE SHORTAGE IS OVER
I remember that in the mid-90s, a temporary bump up in the nursing supply led Congress to skip extending the H-2A nurse visa program. HUGE mistake as the long term projections were ignored. We can't make this mistake again. The American Association for International Healthcare Recruitment has created an excellent document making the case.
A fairly balanced piece, except that it seems to ignore what I always say - foreign nurses are critical to alleviating the nursing shortage we have TODAY. Training more American nurses is part of the long term solution since it will take several years to really get those numbers up. We should be pursuing both and it is a false choice to say we need to be pursuing one or the other.
While public perceptions are that Mexican immigrants primarily rely on US health care institutions to meet their needs, a new paper published by UCLA researchers shows that at least in that state a sizable portion of the immigration population is actually going back to Mexico for such care.
